Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, April 9, 2014 — Saint Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) shrugged off Victoria Junior College (VJC) to secure a 73–15 win in the first round of the National A Division Basketball Championship.

Ashley Ng (SAJC #5) scored a game-high 15 points while Robin Alviedo (SAJC #8) had 12 points. Teng Wye Kit (VJC #6) managed to muster a team-high five points as consolation.

Constantly finding themselves starved out in their own area by SAJC, VJC pushed for fast-breaks and were eager to retain posession of the ball.

Robin Alviedo (SAJC #8) led with fast breaks as SAJC were able to find space for simple drives to the basket. In this fashion, SAJC were able to gain most points through lay-ups and free throws as VJC could not run back for defence fast enough.

When SAJC missed their shots, Lim Zheng Xuan (SAJC #11) and Wu Shao Yang (SAJC #6) were able to use their physical frames to get offensive rebounds to pass the ball out for their teammates to shoot again. VJC were able to spring a few surprises on SAJC but usually saw their passes intercepted too easily.

SAJC captain, Robin (#8), commented, “We could have focused on our rebounds and turnovers for a better game. Better teamwork will help us through.”

SAJC will meet Anglo-Chinese Junior College next on Thursday, April 17, while VJC will play River Valley High on Monday, April 21.
