Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, April 9, 2014 — Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) saw off Yishun Junior College (YJC) in a convincing 59–10 opening win in the first round of the National A Division Basketball Championship.

Sixu Vongsuvanish (NYJC #10) scored a game-high 11 points while Sim Lee Ching (NYJC #10) had 10 points. (YJC #9) and (YJC #10) managed a team-high four points each.

NYJC dominated in physicality and shooting accuracy. NYJC outscored YJC consistently with fast-breaks and quicker, decisive passes.

The first half saw YJC miss their chances whenever they brought the ball below the hoop as they also appeared shaky with their passes. Sim Lee Ching (NYJC #11) managed to drive through YJC’s defence with consistent ease. This gave them easy baskets as YJC haplessly watched them storm to a 33–4 lead by the end of the first half.

The second half saw YJC being more organised in their man-to-man defence, which allowed them to gain chances to hook the ball away from the NYJC players. Their shooting, however, let them down throughout as they were pressured to shoot quickly because their opponents bore down on them.

NYJC Captain, Audrey Tay (#14), commented, “We felt that we’ve improved since our last game and played well today, especially with trainings 3 times a week to prepare for today. Most of us have been playing since secondary school, but we still have to build on our teamwork. We aim to get into the top four.”

Yishun Junior College will meet Serangoon Junior College next on Thursday, April 17, while Nanyang Junior College will play Dunman High on Monday, April 21.
