Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, April 3, 2014 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) defeated Unity Secondary (USS) 37–17 in the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship. With the victory, SCGS topped their group with a 3–0 win-loss record.

Charmaine Koh (SCGS #13) led all scorers with 13 points. She did most of her damage in the first quarter. Priscilla Wong (USS #5) and Xiang Xuan (USS #13) scored five points apiece to pace their team.

This was a rematch of the 2013 B Division Girls semi-final, which Unity narrowly won 62–58. SCGS managed to erase that memory with an impressive defensive display in this game.

SCGS started the game on a 10–0 run. Unity were unable to make any of their shots, as SCGS’s stifling defence managed to force them into misses. Charmaine Koh (SCGS #13) had 10 points in the first quarter. She did well to box out her defender on the offensive end, which allowed her to put back her team mate’s misses.

The second quarter saw SCGS’s defence take things up a notch. They denied the entry pass into the post and aggressively closed out on Unity players on the perimeter. This strategy held Unity’s offence to just one point in the quarter. SCGS enjoyed a comfortable 21–4 lead at the half-time break.

SCGS continued their strong defence into the second half, preventing Unity from posting a double-digit scoring quarter throughout the game.

On the offensive end, SCGS did just enough to keep the game out of Unity’s reach. Tiana Ng (#5) and Charmaine (#13) were responsible for keeping the SCGS offence humming smoothly. Both players combined for nine points in the second half.

In the end, SCGS eventually emerged with the 37–17 win to maintain their unbeaten streak this season.

SCGS captain, Rachel Mok (#6), said, “We feel very happy to win all our games in the first round. However, we have to stay focused for the next round. We won today because we really wanted every ball and we dived for them each time. We were calm throughout the game and we knew what we wanted. We will do our best in the next round.”
