Nanyang Junior College, Monday, March 31, 2014 — Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) defeated Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (ACS(I)) 2–0 in their opening game in the National A Division Boys Football Championship.

Muhammad Hakim (#11) and Chiang Ken Ji (#7) had a goal each in the game.

NYJC dominated from the start, holding most of the possession in the first half. They played with good defense and dealt with any ACS(I) attack comfortably.

The first goal came in the opening minutes when Muhammad Hakim (NYJC #11) met Jeremy Chan’s (NYJC #17) corner. Hakim was just in front of the goal post, and connected well to send the ball into the back of the net to put NYJC 1–0 up.

Following a pass from Hakim (NYJC #11), Chiang Ken Ji (NYJC #7) headed one into the roof of the net to add one more to the scoresheet.

ACS(I) had a couple of scoring opportunities, but their shots were mostly wide of the post. Yusof (ACS(I) #8) was booked following a foul on Darryl Ong (NYJC #3) to give NYJC a free-kick but nothing came out of it.

In the final minutes of the first half, Benedict Chua (ACS(I) #10) took a free-kick but the ball was cleared by NYJC who took a 2–0 lead going into the break.

ACS(I) came back in the second half and saw more possession. Benedict (ACS(I) #10) and Tan Quan Rui (ACS(I) #15) tried for goals but their shots looped over the crossbar. ACS(I) attempted a few more shots which were on target, but failed to make any marks on the scoresheet.

It was a goalless second half and NYJC goalkeeper, Nurdin (#18), kept a clean sheet.

NYJC captain, Hakim (#11), said, “It was fantastic. It was a tough match today, but my team did not give up and pushed for a win. We are ultimately aiming for top four, as I think we do have the potential, but we are taking one game at a time.”
