Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, March 28, 2014 — CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) (CHIJ) broke away from a tie in the final minute to defeat Chung Cheng High (Main) 49–46 in the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship.

Jayne Chan (CHIJ #12) and Desiree Lee (CHIJ #14) scored a game-high 23 points each, while Sim Zhi Ting (#9) had a team-high 19 points.

Jayne Chan (CHIJ #12) started off the game with good defensive efforts as she stole several balls to drive up the court for easy layups. She was unstoppable on her drives as she performed good fakes to shake off her defenders. Offensively, she paced her team by putting in eight points straight.

For Chung Cheng High (Main), they relied on cutting in to add points onto the scoreboard gradually. Sim Zhi Ting (#9) was the key player for her team during offensive plays. She contributed 11 points in the first quarter alone.

Chung Cheng High (Main) held a slight lead of 18–15 when the first quarter ended.

In the second quarter, Chung Cheng High (Main) had weak defence in the paint, which proved to be costly as they allowed CHIJ to cut in effortlessly. They also faced foul troubles as Koh Han Ning (#13) had already accumulated three personal fouls early in the second quarter, and was forced to sit out for a huge stretch.

CHIJ levelled at 21–21 midway through the second quarter, and took over the lead with Jayne’s (#12) layup. Chung Cheng High (Main) battled back for the lead, and as such no more than two points separated the teams the rest of the quarter. CHIJ led by merely two points going into the halftime break (27–25).

In the second half, the CHIJ duo of Jayne (#12) and Desiree Lee (#14) connected well and led their team offensively, taking turns to score.

Zhi Ting (CCH #9) continued to play a huge part in her team’s offensive plays with strong drives. Pearlin Than (#12) took ill-advised shots from the beginning of the second half, but finally found her touch to sink two jumpers consecutively after several tries at the basket.

Early in the fourth quarter, Ming Xia (CCH #5) picked up her fifth personal foul to be forced out of the game. Her teammate Han Ning (CCH #13) was subbed in after sitting out for most of the match due to foul trouble. She made a difference to Chung Cheng High (Main)’s offenses with her aggressiveness in the paint, also denying cut-ins from CHIJ and pulled down rebounds.

In the final minute of the game, Han Ning (#13) scored a crucial underbasket to tie at 46–46. However, the CHIJ duo eventually pulled away towards the end with Desiree’s (#14) layup and Jayne’s (#12) free throw conversion, lifting CHIJ to a 49–46 win over Chung Cheng High (Main).

With this win, CHIJ (Toa Payoh) hold a 1-1 win-loss record and have yet to qualify for the second round of the championship. On the other hand, Chung Cheng High (Main) have recorded a second loss, and are eliminated from the championship.

Chung Cheng High (Main) captain, Zhi Ting (#9), said, “I think we gave up in the last quarter. We did well in the first three quarters, but then we gave up. We also made unnecessary fouls towards the end.”

CHIJ (Toa Payoh) captain, Jayne Chan (#12), said, “I think that we had more teamwork compared to the previous game against Jurong. Our shooting accuracy were not that high today. The other team was very strong too.”
