Kallang Diamond, Wednesday, March 5, 2014 – Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (ACS(I)) beat Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 12–2 in the National B Division Softball Championship to clinch third place.

ACS(I) had lost to Catholic High in the semi-final while HCI were beaten by Raffles Institution in the other. ACS(I) qualified for the final in 2013.

ACS(I) opened the game with Kyosei Sago (#51) and Wong Kohei (#6) scoring a run each for a 2–0 lead. They then limited HCI to just one run by Nicholas (#2) in the first inning.

With the score at 2-1, ACS(I) then scored two more runs in the second inning through Benjamin Yed (#27) and Kyosei Sago (#51) to bring the score to 4–1.

HCI were kept scoreless throughout the second inning.

Riding on the momentum of the second inning, ACS(I) blew the lead wide open as they put in five more runs in the third inning.

HCI only managed one run in the same inning to trail 2–9 at the end of the third.

ACS(I) scoring continued in the fourth inning. Brandon Song (#9), Benjamin Mok (#13) and Sean Lim (#24) crossed home plate to make it 12–2 and bring the game to a premature close based on the mercy rule.

When asked about what spurred them to win this game, captain of ACS(I), Kyosei Sago (#51) said, “We didn’t want to have a double disappointment as we lost to Catholic High the previous game. This win was something we wanted to do as a team. In addition, we beat Hwa Chong the previous time, so that added on to our confidence coming into this game.”

Captain of HCI, Paul (#27), said after the game, “I thought we lost the game as they came into the game having more confidence and poise. It is not that they were better than us. It is definitely something that we have to improve as a team and not let our previous games affect our morale.”
