Anglican High School, Monday, February 24, 2014 — Anglican High School (AHS) overcame Chung Cheng High (CCH) (Main) 39–26 in the semi-finals to qualify for the final of the East Zone B Division Girls Basketball Championship.

Amelie Lim (AHS #8) paced her team’s offense with 13 points, while Pearlin Than (#12) put up a team-high eight points.

Anglican High have not lost any games so far in the East Zone Championship.

From the start of the game, Anglican High went on a 5–0 run before Pearlin Than (#12) put in the first two points for Chung Cheng High (Main). Pearlin (#12) was a key player for her team as she led her team offensively, driving up against her defenders in the paint several times.

Five minutes into the game, Anglican High were leading 8–3 but a cooperative team effort from the Chung Cheng High side allowed them to close the gap to one point (11–10) with one minute left. However Anglican High managed to pull away to 15–11 by the end of the first quarter with Koh Hwee Ching (#14) converting a bank shot and Ng Qi Hui (#10) sinking a pair of free throws.

It was a low-scoring second quarter as both teams put up aggressive defences, limiting each other’s plays. Both teams had several scoring chances during fast breaks but were unable to convert.

Anglican High went on another 5–0 run when Amelie Lim (#8) made a good interception to drive straight to the basket for an easy two points.

With three minutes left to go before half-time, Pearlin (#12) finally managed to add in two points for Chung Cheng High with a drive to the basket, disregarding her defenders in the key. Su Ziling (#7) made another basket to make it 15–20. In the final minute of the second quarter, Koh Han Ning (#13) was fouled out of the game after contributing three points for Chung Cheng High.

At the start of the second half, Anglican High displayed good team chemistry and registered a 11–0 run, getting past Chung Cheng High’s defence easily.

Chung Cheng High struggled to find the range with their shots as they missed several times in a row in the final minutes of the third quarter. The quarter ended with Anglican High leading 35–19 heading into the fourth.

Anglican High’s Hwee Ching (#14) committed five personal fouls and was forced out of the game three minutes into the last quarter.

Chung Cheng High’s Pearlin (#12) continued to drive up strong against her defenders and drew several fouls. They outscored Anglican High 7–4 in the final quarter, but Anglican High’s dominant defensive rebounding managed to minimize their second-chance points.

Anglican High captain Amelie (#8) said, “I think that we can definitely do better both offensively and defensively. I hope my team can believe in ourselves and do better to succeed as I know we can do it. We hope to win the zonal final and get into nationals top four.”

Chung Chung High captain, Zhi Ting (#9), said, “I think we could have played better, especially for myself I think I could have converted more chances. Our defence could have been more alert and offensively wise I think we have to make proper passes. We are aiming for nationals top eight.”

With the 39–26 win, Anglican High will now face Dunman on Tuesday, March 4, at Anglican High School at 2pm.
