Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, February 24, 2014 — Unity Secondary posted their third straight win in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship with an 84–55 win over Tanglin Secondary.

Jacinth Figueroa (Unity #10) had 18 points and Ko Vic Lee (Unity #8) had 15 to lead a balanced Unity attack. Zeng Zhixin (Tanglin #7) scored 15 to pace Tanglin.

The win puts Unity tied for first in Group Y with a 3–0 win–loss record, along with Bukit Panjang Government High. Both teams have yet to face each other, and at the rate that the group is unfolding, their match on February 28 will determine who tops the group. Tanglin fall to fourth in the group with a 1–2 win–loss record.

Unity started the game on a 15–0 run, giving them a comfortable lead. Crisp passes and good ball rotations allowed them to take open shots. Yong-An (Unity #5) showed good body control to convert a nice alley-oop lay-up on one play.

Tanglin showed some signs of life in the second and third quarter, cutting the Unity lead to six at one point. However, Unity put the game away by switching to their full-court press. Completely worn out by swarming Unity defenders, Tanglin could only sit and watch as the game slowly drifted away from their collective grasp.

Ko Vic Lee (Unity #8) went down injured while defending a play in the third quarter. He sprained his ankle after landing on a Tanglin player’s foot. He was able to help himself to the bench under his own power, albeit walking slowly.

Yong-An (Unity #5) and John Christopher (Unity #6) both did well to communicate with each other on defence. This allowed them to generate a lot of steals, which they converted on the other end. Unity eventually ended the game with an 84–55 win.

Unity top scorer, Jacinth Figueroa (Unity #10), said, “We would like to thank God for giving us strength in this game. It was quite physical and a couple of our players were injured, we are just thankful that they are fine.”

Ko Vic Lee (Unity #8), added, “I think we could have played better today. We need to step up our game as our future matches will be tougher from now on, especially at Nationals.”
