Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 26 — Teck Whye Secondary kept hopes of qualification for the semi-final alive with a 42–29 win over School of Science and Technology (SST) in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Lim Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) led all scorers with 14 points.

The win puts Teck Whye joint-second in Group X with a 3–1 win–loss record, along with New Town Secondary. With Jurong Secondary top of the group, the final match between Teck Whye and New Town on Friday will determine who qualifies second from the group.

The first half was a low-scoring affair which saw both teams turnover the ball regularly. SST took the early advantage, converting most of Teck Whye’s turnover to grab the lead going into the break.

SST then attempted to shut Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) out of the game, putting Oliver Tan (SST #9) on him in the third quarter. This worked well, as Chuan Yong was unable to get the ball most of the time. However, Teck Whye was able to defer to Dharshen (Teck Whye #6). He was able to make the important shots for his team when called upon, helping Teck Whye to keep pace with SST.

Dharshen (Teck Whye #6) and Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) then combined in the final quarter for 12 of their team’s points. This allowed Teck Whye to snatch the lead and eventually the game. Teck Whye would seal the win 42–29. Now, only New Town Secondary stands in their way of a rare semi-final appearance.

Teck Whye captain, Nick Tan (#5), said, “I am very happy to win today. For the upcoming match against New Town, we are both excited and intimidated at the same time. New Town is quite a strong team, but we will just play hard and play well against them.”
