Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 26 — Unity Secondary maintained their perfect record with a 59–15 win over River Valley High in the second round of the West Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Thng Yong-An (Unity #5) led all scorers with 17 points.

The win lifts Unity to a 4–0 win-loss record in Group Y, tied with Bukit Panjang. Both teams have qualified for the semi-final. They now face each other on Friday to determine who tops the group.

Unity completely shut out River Valley in the first quarter, holding them scoreless on the back of a fearsome full-court press. Unity was able to enjoy a balanced offensive attack, as six different players were able to put up points on the board in the quarter.

Yong-An (Unity #5) experienced foul trouble in the second quarter, picking up his third with five minutes remaining. He was forced to watch the rest of the quarter from the bench. Both teams were unable to score much, totalling seven points total in the quarter.

The third quarter saw Unity extend the lead through Yong-An (Unity #5) and John Christopher (Unity #6). Both players communicated well with each other on defence to generate steals. They would then head up court on fast breaks to score. They accounted for 18 of Unity’s 20 points in the quarter through their efforts.

River Valley’s offence completely stagnated in the final quarter, they could not buy a shot if they wanted to. By this time, Unity sent in their reserves to ice the game. The game ended in Unity’s favour 59–15.

Unity top scorer, Thng Yong-An (#5), said, “I think we played great today, better than our previous games. Even though we were down one player, with Ko Vic (Unity #8) sitting out this game, we were able to perform really well. We want to go to the zonal final, but more importantly, we want to beat Bukit Panjang this Friday. We have to continue to improve our shooting, passing as well as communication on defence if we want to secure it.”
