Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 26 — New Town Secondary posted a routine 52–35 win over Jurong West Secondary in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Benjamin Ang (Jurong West #13) and Jeremy Anand (New Town #8) had 10 points apiece to lead all scorers.
The win puts New Town joint-second in Group X with a 3–1 win–loss record, tied with Teck Whye Secondary. Both teams now face each other on Friday, in a match where the winner will qualify for the semi-final.
New Town started off the game with a 7–0 run, allowing them to build a comfortable lead. Good fundamentals on defence allowed New Town to alter any Jurong West shots.
The second quarter saw a very impulsive Jurong West, as they took their shots too quickly. The run and gun offence from New Town was working well, helping them extend their lead even further.
Jurong West steadied their offence in the second half, keeping pace with New Town throughout. New Town could have put away the game for good, but bad finishing in front of the basket cost them. The wasted points gave Jurong West a sliver of hope of making a comeback.
Both teams were scrapping for the ball towards the end, which saw multiple turnovers on both sides. New Town eventually finished the game 52–35 victors, setting the stage for their match against Teck Whye Secondary on Friday.
New Town captain, Denilson Soh (#11), commented, “We have to be more confident in taking shots. We have to step up on our defence and communication and not allow the opponents easy baskets.”
