Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, February 24, 2014 — Jurong Secondary maintained their perfect record in Group X with a 53–46 win over feisty New Town Secondary in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Eugene Yeong (Jurong #9) and Jeremy Anand (New Town #8) were joint-top scorers with 12 points apiece.
The win lifts Jurong to the top of Group X with a 3–0 win–loss record. New Town drop to a 2–1 record, which puts them in a three-way tie with Jurong West Secondary and Teck Whye Secondary.
Both teams started off shaky, throwing a lot of misplaced passes. Jurong had the initial advantage on the boards, outjumping their New Town counterparts at each opportunity. New Town did not do well to keep the ball, turning the ball over a lot of times. Jurong were able to get close attempts at the rim, which allowed them to take the early lead.
The second quarter saw New Town able to implement their high-octane offence, consisting of fast breaks and aggressive drives to the rim. The Jurong defence was unable to keep up with them, allowing New Town players to cut into the paint easily. New Town’s defence also did well to shut down Jurong on offence, not letting their players make shots.
A 7–0 run to start the third quarter allowed Jurong to keep the lead for good. They were led in scoring in the period by Lee Jia Hui (Jurong #6), who scored seven points.
New Town were able to keep themselves close in the game, but were unable to find a breakthrough. The pivotal moment came in the fourth quarter, when New Town had two free throws to make the it a two-possession game. However, both free throws missed and New Town lost all momentum after that, ceding the game to Jurong 46–53.
Jurong captain, Jia Hui (#6), commented, “We allowed them (New Town) to collect a lot of rebounds in the first half. I think the turning point of the game would be in the second half, as we harassed them aggressively on defence.”
