Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 14, 2014 — River Valley High School (RVHS) defeated School of Science and Technology 41–37 in the West Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship to finish top of their first-round group. SST finished second and also qualified for the second round.

Darren Leung (RVHS #8) led all scorers with 20 points.

In the first quarter, River Valley were getting steals, but were unable to convert, while SST were frantic, overshooting on their jumpers and hitting the top of the board with regularity. Both teams were able to put much points on the board, as River Valley took a 9–7 lead going into the second quarter.

Yi Chieh (SST #11) led the way for his team early on in the second quarter. He made a nice bunny hop to score and followed that up with a foul-in on the next possession. Defensively though, SST allowed River Valley to cut into the paint too easily. Bak Hin (RVHS #14) benefited from this, finding constant opportunities at the rim. Nonetheless, SST found a way to go into half-time up by one point.

River Valley pulled away in the third quarter on the back of good defence. They switched to a full-court press, generating steals that led to easy baskets for them. SST started getting desperate on offence, forcing shots up. This did not help, as they were unable to convert on any of their bank shots.

SST showed some signs of life in the final quarter, slowly pulling themselves back into the game. They managed to prevent River Valley from scoring for six minutes, but were unable to do much on their part to score. River Valley managed to break their drought and hang on to the lead. They eventually prevailed 41–37, taking the top spot in the group.

River Valley captain, Darren Leung (#8), said, “We did not play to our expectations today, especially on defence. The communication was lacking, especially when someone cut into the paint. We hope to get back-to-back top four finishes in West Zone and hope to qualify for nationals.”
