Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, February 12, 2014 — With two seconds left in regulation, Nigel Teo (Seng Kang #13) scored the winning basket off an inbounds play to help Seng Kang Secondary (SKS) beat North View Secondary (NVSS) 38–36 in the second round of the North Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship. Nigel also had a game-high 16 points to go with his buzzer-beater.

This was Seng Kang’s first win in group X, lifting them to a 1–3 record, while North View remained at the bottom with no wins.

The first quarter was played at a slow pace, as both teams had difficulty finding the basket. Seng Kang played at a steady pace as they tried to look for ways to penetrate the North View defence. However, they coughed up the ball each time, allowing North View to race down the other end. North View’s finishing was lacking, contributing to their slow start. Despite these difficulties, North View found themselves up 7–4 heading into the second quarter.

Seng Kang turned it up a notch in the second quarter. Their offence seemed completely different from the one in the first quarter as they drove aggressively to the rim. This strategy paid dividends, as Seng Kang got into the paint at will. They scored 18 points in the quarter, while holding North View to only six points. This gave them a comfortable lead heading into the second quarter, as they led 22–13.

The third quarter saw offence slow to a crawl again as both teams were unable to score in the first three minutes of the quarter. Seng Kang were very cautious, refusing to drive to the basket at all. This cost them, as North View took advantage to cut the deficit.

It was a tense affair in the final quarter, as North View mounted a comeback and slowly ate into Seng Kang’s lead. Pak Lin (SKS #8) did not help matters, when he missed two free throws with half a minute left in the game. North View grabbed that opportunity, sinking two free throws to tie the game with two seconds left. On the ensuing inbound play, Nigel (SKS #13) broke free and received the pass from his teammate. He went hard baseline and laid the ball into the basket for the win, bringing a little light into a torrid second round trip for Seng Kang Secondary.

Seng Kang captain, Rayner (#4), said, “I think we played better compared to the last game. We weren’t good on the offensive rebounds and we need to improve on that. I hope that we have a chance to make top four in the zone next year.”
