Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, February 12, 2014 — Christ Church Secondary (CCS) defeated Yio Chu Kang Secondary (YCKS) 42–28 in the second round of the North Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship. Tay Yong Ann (CCS #9) and Soh Guo Wei (YCKS #7) were joint top-scorers with 9 points apiece.
This win puts Christ Church joint-second in Group Y with Yishun Secondary, both with identical 3–1 win-loss records. Yishun, though, have a better chance of qualifying, having beaten Christ Church 71–51 in an earlier game.
Both teams had trouble scoring in the first quarter. Yio Chu Kang could not find a way past Christ Church’s long front court. Each time they got into the paint, they were met with eager Christ Church players willing to swat the ball away. This caused them a lot of trouble early on and they only managed a fast break lay-up towards the end. Christ Church also had offensive woes of their own. Even though they were able to get nice looks at the rim, they lacked the proper finishing, causing many of their shots to rim out.
Christ Church made some headway on offence in the second quarter. They were able to force turnovers from Yio Chu Kang, breaking down the court for lay ups on the other side. Yio Chu Kang continued to struggle, as they still could not figure out the Christ Church defence. Christ Church went into the half up 20–6.
The third quarter saw Yio Chu Kang make a minor offensive spurt. They scored 12 points in the frame, the most they had out of any quarter in the game. This was helped by a couple of jumpers finally falling for the team. Even though Christ Church’s offence was still bad, they did enough on defence to maintain a comfortable lead. This continued into the fourth quarter, as Christ Church kept Yio Chu Kang at bay long enough for them to seal the game with a 42–28 win.
Christ Church captain, Tay Yong Ann (#9), said, “I think it was an okay game today. We did well on defence. That was what got us the win. We have to improve on our communication for our future games.”
