Republic Polytechnic, Tuesday, February 11, 2014 — St. Gabriel’s Secondary demolished Kent Ridge Secondary with an impressive 13–1 win in the National B Division Floorball Championship.
Dickson Lee (St. Gabriel’s #5) helped himself to five goals to lead his team in scoring.
St. Gabriel’s came out all guns blazing, completely overwhelming the Kent Ridge defence. Even though he faced a lot of shots, the Kent Ridge keeper showed good composure to make the saves. St. Gabriel’s had the lion’s share of the possession, keeping the ball in the Kent Ridge half. The breakthrough came as Nufail Aiman (St. Gabriel’s #3) broke through to score on a narrow shot from the left wing. After that, the floodgates opened for St. Gabriel’s, as they scored another five goals before the period ended.
From this point on, St. Gabriel’s took complete control of the match. The difference in class was apparent as the St. Gabriel’s keeper rarely saw any action. With the exception of Kane Lim (Kent Ridge #11) scoring against the run of play, the St. Gabriel’s keeper had nothing much to do throughout the match as his teammates made sure the ball always stayed in the Kent Ridge half.
St. Gabriel’s used the next two periods to lay an onslaught on the Kent Ridge goal, scoring a further seven goals before the end of the game. Nufail Aiman (St. Gabriel’s #3) distinguished himself in the match, showing good play down the left-wing. He scored a hat-trick to finish behind Dickson (St. Gabriel’s #5) on the scoring list.
St. Gabriel’s captain, Jeremy Chia (#18) said, “I think we did okay today, although we could have done better on attack and defence. We have to train harder after this to make improvements. Our goal for each game is to win and try to get a good margin. We want to at least reclaim second place this year, hopefully even go further and be champions.”
