Anglican High School, Thursday, February 6, 2014 — In a see-saw battle, St Patrick’s School (SPS) nabbed a 34–33 win against Siglap Secondary (SSS) with a made free throw with no time left. Benjamin Tan (SPS #10) was the hero for his team, showing his cool to make the second attempt after missing the initial one.

Ian Tan (SPS #14) led all scorers with 14 points, while Joseph Aguilar (SSS #14) paced his team with 12 points.

Siglap started off well in the first quarter, as their defence correctly identified Wang Qi Rong (SPS #7) as the focal point of his team’s offence. Siglap hounded him relentlessly, forcing him to pass off to his teammates. This threw off the rhythm of the St Patrick’s offence, resulting in a lot of missed shots. Siglap were extremely unfortunate in this quarter as they failed to convert many open looks.

St Patrick’s found a resurgence in the second quarter, going on an 8–2 run to take the lead. Qi Rong (SPS #7) shrugged off the attention from the Siglap defence, dumping it off to Ian (SPS #14) for easy layups. Ian had a good showing this quarter, accounting for six of his team’s 10 points. St Patrick’s took an 18–14 lead into the second half.

The third quarter saw the tide turn in Siglap’s favour. They commenced the quarter on a 10–0 run, taking advantage of a visibly fatigued St Patrick’s team to nab the lead. St Patrick’s were able to generate more open looks this time round, but they were unable to get their shots to fall.

In the final quarter, St Patrick’s rode another scoring streak to bring the game to a tie. With no time left on the clock, Siglap proceeded to foul Benjamin Tan (SPS #10). He was sent to the line, with two attempts to bring his team the win. His first attempt clanked off the front side of the rim, while at the same time, his teammates could be heard shouting their encouragement from the bench. Benjamin (SPS #10) showed his cool by draining the second one to seal the 34–33 win, immediately yelling out in celebration as he got mobbed by his team mates.

St. Patrick’s captain, Qi Rong (#7) commented, “I think we did quite well and we gave them a lot of pressure. But we missed quite a number of easy shots, which we need to work on.”

Siglap captain, Kyle Angelo (#11) said, “It was very burdensome. We did well in the game and our players did their best. We felt excited and nervous when St Patrick’s caught up to us and I think that caused the loss. Moving ahead, we need to improve our individual skills and teamwork.”
