Myanmar, Saturday, December 21, 2013 – Out of 20 Singapore sailors who competed in the 27th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Myanmar, 19 will return with medals around their necks. It is a commendable feat, considering that the majority of the sailors in the team are first-timers at the SEA Games.

The medal haul for sailing is five gold, two silver and five bronze medals. The Gold medals were won by Edward Tan in the Optimist Boys’ category, Fathin Rasyiqin in the Optimist Girls’ category, Elizabeth Yin in the Laser Radial category, the pair of Kimberly Lim and Savannah Siew in the 420 Girls’ category, and the pair of Priscilla low and Cecilia Low in the 470 Ladies’ category.

The sailors’ medal haul establishes Singapore as the top sailing nation at the games. The sailors has exceeded the performance at the 2011 Indonesia SEA Games where they won four Gold, one Silver and three Bronze medals.

The sailors raced off the waters of Ngwe Saung Yacht Club, where they were challenged with a spectrum of racing conditions, with winds ranging from light breezes to 20-knot gales.

The pair of Kimberly Lim and Savannah Siew had the best performance across all classes. They won all 12 races except for Race 2, which they scored an OCS (On the Course Side) for having a foul start. The OCS warranted a last-place finish in that race. They finished with a total of 10 points after discarding results from their worst two races.

Looking forward, Chung Pei Ming, the Head of High Performance, said: “Our Singapore Team has done well once again in not just winning on water, but also earning the respect of their competitors. Our sailors are happy, but more importantly, they have been inspired to succeed in the 2015 SEA Games and beyond!”
