Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, August 28, 2013 — Anglican High took advantage of defensive lapses in the third quarter to beat Dunman Secondary 47–33 in the semi-final of the National C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

This marks Anglican’s first trip to the C Division girls’ final since they last won the title back in 2006. Clarice Tan (#5) had a game-high 19 points as she combined with teammate Carissa Chan (#7) to score 30 points in total for Anglican High.

The first quarter was an extremely tight affair, as both teams were solid on defence. Anglican looked to penetrate the lane to generate open looks for their players but they were unable to convert on them.

Dunman’s offence attempted to rotate the ball on the perimeter while looking for holes in Anglican’s defence, but the tactic proved to be inefficient as they managed to succeed only once on a made 3-pointer.

The scoring started to become anaemic in the middle of the quarter, as both teams seemed content with settling for long jump shots. As the quarter wound down, Anglican found themselves with a slim one-point lead.

In the second quarter, the game turned into a scrappy affair. Players were hustling hard in an attempt to turn the tide of the game in their favour. Possession changed hands quickly as both teams tried to score on the fast break but both teams suffered a scoring drought which lasted roughly four minutes.

It was finally broken by Clarissa Chan (#7), who made a layup in the paint to put her team up by two. Dunman found themselves in a relatively early penalty situation, due to unnecessary fouls on their part. Nevertheless, they manage to keep pace with Anglican and were only down one point heading into the second half.

Anglican High came out of the huddle with a focused and disciplined defence. Players were rotating efficiently to cover the holes left open by their teammates, not allowing Dunman to penetrate the lane for an easy layup. Defensive lapses on Dunman’s part gave Anglican High a chance to blow the game open, as they took advantage of the chances to score on the break.

In the final quarter, Dunman resorted to desperate measures, resorting to a full court press with their season on the line. However, Anglican High was able to break the press each time with good ball movement. Dunman fought hard as they clung to whatever sliver of hope was left, but Anglican prevailed to win 47–33 and progress to their first C Division final in seven years.

Navani (AHS #4) said: “It feels extremely wonderful to win! This will be my first final. We played extremely well on defence and we were able to capitalise on opportunities. We need to work more on our transition game if we are to become the champions!”
