Budapest, Hungary, Friday, August 9, 2013 – The Singapore contingent achieved a few firsts at these Championships with fencers qualifying for the round of 64 in the men’s sabre, epee and foil and women’s foil individual categories for the first time.

Lim Wei Wen of Singapore finished 56th out of 207 fencers in the men’s epee individual event at the 2013 World Fencing Championships. This is the highest ever finish for a Singaporean in this category which has the largest number of competitors amongst all the weapon groups at the Championships.

In the round of 64, Lim Wei Wen had a great start against France’s Ulrich Robeiri to lead 5–3 but he eventually went down 10–15. Robeiri was part of the team that won the epee gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games for France.

Tan Yuan Zi qualified for the round of 64 in the men’s foil, while David Chan went as far in the sabre.

Yuan Zi achieved a personal best and an all time high placing of 59th out of 124 fencers in the men’s foil.

Against his taller and bulkier British opponent, James-Andrew Davis, the bronze medallist at the 2013 European Championships and who eventually finished 18th, Yuan Zi led 2–1 at the start but eventually succumbed 4–15 in the round of 64.

The youngest fencer in the Singapore contingent, Choy Yu Yong, 16, finished a credible 90th out of 132 fencers in the sabre category.

Wang Wenying finished 63rd out of 83 athletes in the women’s foil individual event.
