PESEB, Evans Road, Friday, July 31, 2013 — Round 2 of the South Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship concluded on July 31. Peicai will take on Catholic High in the first semi-final, while Fairfield Methodist and Raffles Institution cross swords in a repeat of last year’s third and fourth place match. We recap the group standings and see how each team got there.

Group X
Semi-Finalists — Peicai Secondary (1st), Raffles Institution (2nd)

In a hotly-contested group where four teams all had an equal chance of qualifying for the semi-finals, Peicai Secondary stood out from the pack. They went undefeated through the gauntlet of games, winning all by double-digit margins. They look favourites for the zone title this year, although dark horses Fairfield Methodist School of Group Y could push them all the way.

Raffles Institution endured a nail-biting final game with Yuying to qualify in second place. Raffles required a win to comfortably secure their semi-final spot, whereas Yuying needed to win by 21 to pip Raffles on points difference.

The outcome of the Raffles–Yuying matchup also determined the fate of Queensway Secondary, who had a minute chance of qualifying if Raffles were to lose to Yuying. In the end, Raffles ran out 48–40 winners and reduced the Queensway–Mayflower match-up to a dead rubber, eliminating both teams.

Peicai will look to wrest the crown for themselves this year, as they fell to Catholic High in the zonal final last year.

Group Y
Semi-Finalists — Fairfield Methodist School (1st), Catholic High (2nd)

Fairfield Methodist fully embraced the dark horse label this year, surprising Catholic High with a 47–40 win in a game that decided the winner of Group Y. They will look to exact revenge on Raffles Institution, who took them down 52–44 in the 3rd/4th place match last year. Catholic High are still on course to defend their zone title, surviving the loss to Fairfield to win the rest of the matches to qualify second.
