Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, July 19, 2013 — Round 1 of the North Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championship finally concluded on July 19. We recap the final standings of each group, as well as some background information as to how each team qualified for Round 2.

Group A
Round 2 Qualifiers — Punggol Secondary (1st), Bowen Secondary (2nd)

Punggol Secondary cruised into Round 2, going undefeated and beating each team in their group with double-digit margins. Bowen edged out Edgefield Secondary in their first game 31-29 to qualify in second place. Both teams will look to improve on last year’s disappointment, where they both failed to make it out of Round 2.

Group B
Round 2 Qualifiers — Presbyterian High (1st), Canberra Secondary (2nd)
Last year’s Zonal Champions and heavy favourites Presbyterian High qualified first in the group. Scoring no less than 40 points in each of their games, with the exception of one, a 29-15 win to Yishun Secondary. Canberra Secondary qualified for second place after defeating Anderson Secondary 44–36 in their final game of round 1.

Group C
Round 2 Qualifiers —Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary (1st), Nan Chiau High (2nd)
2012 Zonal Semi-finalists, Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary, will look to improve on their previous team’s achievements as they stormed their way into Round 2 with an unbeaten record. Nan Chiau High upset favourites Deyi Secondary to book their place in Round 2 as well, erasing the disappointment of last year’s early exit.

Group D
Round 2 Qualifiers — Christ Church Secondary (1st), Yio Chu Kang Secondary (2nd)
In a three horse race, Christ Church Secondary qualified unbeaten in the group, however, they looked inconsistent at times. Struggling to close wins against Yio Chu Kang and Orchid Park, last year’s top-4 finisher have a ways to go if they want to make their way to the zonal finals. Yio Chu Kang could have easily finished first as well, if not for their agonisingly-close 1-point loss to Christ Church.

Group E
Round 2 Qualifiers — North Vista Secondary (1st), Seng Kang Secondary (2nd)
It was no surprise that North Vista qualified first in the group, given their consistent form in the North Zone championships over the past few years. Seng Kang will look to be the upstarts in Round 2, having qualified after narrowly missing out last year.
