Bishan Stadium, Tuesday, April 30, 2013 — Reuben Lee of Temasek Primary won the C boys’ 600 metres gold in a new record time of 1 minute 44.47 seconds at the 54th National Primary Track and Field Championships.
In so doing, he broke his own record of 1:46.66 which he had set earlier in the heats. The previous record was 1:49.04 and it was set by Gary Wee Wei Zhong, then of Greenwood Primary, in 2009.
Given his outstanding performance in the heats, Reuben felt that the finals was “more tense and tiring” as he had also set a personal goal to beat his new record that he had set in the heats.
Standing at 1.6m, the 11-year-old is easily distinguishable from his competitors by his height even from a distance. Reuben first joined Temasek’s track-and-field team in Primary 1 when he was given an option to take up a co-curriculum activity, where he trained with the upper primary pupils.
Apart from his record-breaking performance in the 600 metres race, Reuben also set a new record in the C boys’ 300 metres heats where he clocked a time of 43.55 seconds. The previous record of 44.01 was set by Ajay Elijah Shanmugam, then of Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary, in 2012.
