Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 8, 2013 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) defeated North Vista Secondary 48–17 in the second round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship.

SCGS held possession of the ball for most of the first quarter as North Vista struggled to get the ball past the half-court line. SCGS led 10–2 with five minutes remaining. However, SCGS committed several fouls, giving North Vista free throws which were converted to end the quarter leading 16–5.

In the second quarter, North Vista’s Helisa Bte Salim (#10) was quick to score the first fast-break while SCGS were less alert. She seized many rebounds and orchestrated many attack attempts in this quarter. However, SCGS returned the favour with fighting spirit in the paint to increase their lead further to 20–7, notably through Charmaine Koh (#13). Despite many falls to the ground, SCGS held on tightly to the ball to keep possession, leading 28–9 at the end of the quarter.

SCGS’ Carisia Lee (#7) kick started the third quarter with a jumper, followed by a basket from teammate Rachel Mok (#6). Jolene Ng (#9) of North Vista finally broke SCGS’ 5–0 run with a fast-break. However, Sevilla Chea (#14) of SCGS replied with impressive play – scoring a jumper after a good fake, performing a smooth intercept and eventually sinking in her free throw. SCGS continued on a 9–0 run to lead 42-11.

The last quarter saw North Vista’s Doreen Goh (#8) executing a timely bounce pass to teammate Sheryl Koh (#11) to score an under-basket. However, SCGS’ defence was relentless to the end, led by Ceres Suwe (#9), who assisted many fast-breaks with her powerful long passes. The game ended with one last fast-break from Carisia (#7) of SCGS, with the team winning 48–17.

Captain of SCGS, Woon Wei Jing (#12), felt happy with her team’s performance.

“It was generally a good game. We played with strong defence. However, it will be tiring for our team with back-to-back games,” said Wei Jing, referring to the game against Anglican High scheduled for the next day.

North Vista’s captain Cheng Xin Yi (#7) commented: “We had enjoyed the match. That is very important as we want to play with no regrets.”
