Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 1, 2013 — West Zone Champions Unity Secondary blew past North Vista Secondary 63-20 in the National B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

Unity came on strongly and fiercely in the first quarter, with Chia Siu Wei (#11) scoring five points consecutively. With North Vista’s careless dribbling and Unity’s relentless attacks in every intercept, the latter led 15–0 at five minutes. Unity’s entire starting team was then substituted out and Lee Jia Yi (#6) extended their lead with a 3-pointer.

After several minutes, North Vista’s Sheryl Koh (#11) finally scored her team’s first point after being awarded with a free throw. The team struggled to find an opening in Unity’s tight defence, leaving the ball mostly in their opponents’ possession. The first quarter ended with Unity leading 21–3.

In the second quarter, North Vista struggled to cut past the aggressive defence to put in their shots, trailing 33–10 as Unity continued to sink in consecutive shots. Physically stronger, Unity – particularly Lim Xiang Xuan (#13) – dominated the rebounds and capitalised on their fast-breaks to outscore North Vista 40–10. Under great pressure, North Vista fumbled in their attacks resulting in costly mispasses.

The third quarter saw Unity leaving no chance for North Vista as they maintained their full-court press. Despite North Vista’s Doreen Goh (#8) sinking in a three, Unity responded immediately with captain Au Zi Yu’s (#9) free throws and a layup. Priscilla Wong (#5) of Unity widened the gap by dropping in two consecutive fast-breaks, finishing the quarter at 52–13.

Unity were unrelenting in their scoring streak even in the last quarter, with every player scoring at least two points. Jia Yi (#6) of Unity contributed to her team’s incessant scoring with her long jumpers, eventually triumphing 63–20 over North Vista.

“We had a strong start and widened the score gap. Our defence also prevented the opponents (North Vista) from scoring. Our teamwork has improved and we boxed out for most of our rebounds,” said Unity’s captain Au Zi Yu (#9).

North Vista’s captain Cheng Xin Yi (#7) commented graciously: “We tried our best but our performance was not up to expectations. The Unity team has played well.”
