ITE College East (Simei), Saturday, January 26, 2013 – Ang Wei Si of Temasek Polytechnic (TP) clocked a personal best time of 10.91 seconds to win the men’s 100m final at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Track and Field Championships.

Afiqul Adib, also of TP, won the silver medal in a personal best of 10.99 while Chan Kian Chong of Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) was third in 11.21.

Wei Si and Afiqul looked to be the likely winners as soon as they broke out of their starting blocks, with both neck-and-neck and establishing a clear lead over the rest at the 40m mark. Wei Si then had the extra spark that was needed to pull away from Afiqul at the 60m mark.

“The win was unexpected actually and I am very surprised. I figured that I had a chance only after the heats,” said Wei Si, who had clocked a wind-legal time of 10.97 seconds earlier in the afternoon, his first ever sub-11 seconds run. The final was run with a wind speed of +3.2 metres per second, which is above the 2.0 m/s limit for record-setting purposes.

“The highlight for me was the 60-70m mark of the race, when I started to pull away from the rest. The race was fine, save for the strong wind which was quite a hindrance,” added Wei Si.

Fellow teammate and competitor Afiqul Adib was happy with his race.

“The race was interesting for me. I felt good because I was able to apply what my coach had taught me,” said Afiqul.

For Afiqul, a good start helped him in the race.

“I had a good start, and that was important for me. It also felt good when I started to pull away from the rest at the 30-40m mark,” said Afiqul.

Afiqul added that he was aiming for a low 22s for his 200m race.

The IVP Track and Field Championships continue this Saturday, February 2nd, at ITE College East (Simei).
