Singapore Track & Field Open: Scott Wong sets two PBs in discus and shot put
Bishan Stadium, Saturday-Sunday, August 25-26, 2012 — Singapore’s Scott Wong, 22, set two new personal bests (PBs) in the discus and shot put at the 74th Singapore Open Track and Field Championship.
Scott, won the gold with his first throw of 15.89m in the men’s shot put (7.26kg), 0.11m further than Hirofumi Oyama’s best effort of 14.16m.
John Tan of Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College East also set a new PB when he finished third with a 11.03m.
“I am happy with my performance though I have been throwing 16m for quite a while now. I feel physically stronger and it is just awesome to beat my personal best and win here at the Singapore Open,” said Scott who is studying medicine in Manchester.
“For my personal best, I have mixed expectations as I know that I’m physically there but the past few days leading up to the Singapore Open, I wasn’t feeling very well. So when my first throw landed at 15.89, I realized my training programme is actually working.
“What I need now is a string of competitions. The Singapore Open is the first part of my competition phase and it has been a good start. I have been preparing for 2-3 months through a structured plan and now it is bearing fruit,” added Scott.
On the second day of competition, Scott finished third in the discus with a PB of 48.50m. His previous PB was 45.90m.
Jun Fujiwara of Japan was first with a 50.70m effort. James Wong, 43, Singapore’s most bemedalled South-east Asian (SEA) Games athlete, was fifth with a 46.37m.
