Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, July 31, 2012 — In their second match in two days, North Vista Secondary beat Dunman High 50-35 in the first round of the National C Division Basketball Championship.

This is Dunman High’s second defeat this round after losing to Catholic High on Monday, and the team will not proceed to the second round of the Nationals. This is also North Vista’s second win, which guarantees them a place in Round 2 no matter the outcome of their next match.

Dunman High’s top scorer was Tan Jin Hui (#8), who scored most of Dunman High’s points in the first quarter, but found himself in foul trouble for his aggressive play. He came on again in the final quarter, and his quick feints beneath the basket worked to distract the North Vista defense more than once, giving him or his teammates room to score.

North Vista’s top scorer was Christian co Pepito (#4), who scored nine points in a single streak in the second quarter. Christian and Jin Hui each had a game-high 14 points.

Throughout the game, North Vista’s height advantage showed through. The team was able to keep the ball at Dunman’s basket, pressing the offensive until they scored or the ball went out of play.

At one point in the second quarter, North Vista made five consecutive shots from under Dunman High’s basket, with the latter’s defense completely unable to snatch the defensive rebounds. Although Dunman High did snatch the ball in the end, North Vista intercepted it with Shiek Ridwan (#10) converting with a simple shot.

On Dunman High’s part, the team had trouble scoring even after advancing past North Vista’s defense. Between Dunman High’s misses, North Vista’s taller players’ ability to block their shots, intercepted passes and failure to catch rebounds, Dunman High found very few opportunities to shoot, let alone score. Dunman High found themselves restricted to making mid-range shots and three-point attempts, which more often than not ended in misses.

Dunman High’s captain, Jin Hui (#8), felt that his team did not do well.

“[We played] very poorly. First quarter I made a lot of fouls. Because of foul trouble, I couldn’t play that much. The opponent took advantage of that; made use of their height and strength,” said Jin Hui.

“Defense-wise, many of our rebounds were taken by them, mainly because of their height advantage. On the offense side… just not that good,” he added.

North Vista’s captain, Sim Zhen (#13), was more upbeat about the victory, but was also critical about the team’s performance.

Asked about how the match went, he replied: “Okay … So far okay. Defense today was not good enough; can be better.”

On their opponents, Sim Zhen said: “Dunman — not saying they’re a lousy school — they’re a good school, just that we were able to break their defense.”

Asked about his goals for this season, Sim Zhen said: “Our targets is the top four, and hopefully, the final.”

Dunman High’s next opponent is New Town Secondary who are also out of the running for the next round. The match will be on Thursday, August 2nd, 12.45pm, at Clementi Sports Hall.

Dunman High’s captain, Jin Hui, expressed confidence about beating New Town to finish their C Div Basketball campaign on a cheerful note. Dunman High ranked fourth in the East Zone, while New Town were third in the West Zone.

North Vista will next face off against Catholic High on Thursday, August 2nd, 12.45pm, at Clementi Sports Hall. Catholic High are the current South Zone champions, while North Vista finished second in the North Zone after a very narrow loss to champions Presbyterian High. Regardless of the result, both teams will move on to the second round.
