Clementi lost a close game 41-42 to Pioneer CSC recently in the Community Games basketball tournament.

Suiting up for Clementi was S. Satguru, 19, who actually grew up playing football for his school, Clementi Woods Secondary.

He would have continued playing football if he hadn’t been talent spotted.

“Last year, the coach say me playing in the Milo Youth Cup and asked me to try out for his team,” said Guru, as he is known to his teammates.

It turned out to be a good choice as Guru scored a team-high 13 points for his team against Pioneer.

“I live in the same estate, at Clementi Ave 5. I play at Clementi CC or an open court behind Pei Tong Primary. I have known these guys for three to four years,” said Guru.

“The Community Games is quite good. I get to meet people from the other CCs (Community Clubs),” added Guru, who started out playing 3-on-3 basketball.

As for being the only Indian Singaporean on the team, Guru said it was never an issue.

“Race is a non-issue. If you can play, join in. I’ve never had any problems,” said Guru with a smile.
