United World College, Sunday, May 20, 2012 — Boon Lay CSC beat Telok Blangah Team 1 62-47 to advance to the West Coast Cluster final in the Community Games basketball tournament.

It was still a close game at half time with Boon Lay leading by four points at 33-29. However, Telok Blangah were outscored 22-4 in the third quarter which left them trailing by 14 points heading into the fourth. It was a deficit they could not overcome as they went outscored 11-10 in the final quarter to concede the game.

Shi Hao (#8) of Boon Lay had a game-high 18 points, including one 3-pointer, while Shi Jie was the top scorer for Telok Blangah with 16 points, including two 3-pointers.

“We’ve got the Community Games mood going after the win. I’m more happy,” said Vincent Koh, 40, coach of Boon Lay.

The Games have also helped some players to cross some divides.

“I’ve got to know other non-Chinese players. Last time didn’t know them but now good friends because we are in the same team,” said Wong Hock Chuan, who had nine points in the game.

“The atmosphere is better than last time,” said teammate Fok Yew Sing, referring to the supporters who came down to watch the game.

“I have made new friends through the Community Games. Last time we didn’t play with Malays,” added Yew Sing who finished with 11 points.

Boon Lay will now play West Coast CSC in the Cluster final.

“As a team specially formed for this competition, we took two months to bond and hone our skills. We will give it our best shot and hopefully, our team will emerge the champions,” said Tajul Abedin, 44, who scored two points in the game.

About 200 spectators were on hand to watch the games.

“I think the Community Games gives the opportunity for residents from the various constituencies a chance to interact whether as a player or supporter,” said Yenty Ramli, 39.
