Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Tuesday, April 10, 2012 — Samuel Lim of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) won the A Division Boys’ High Jump with a 2-metre clearance, but not before attempting to break a 23-year-old record with the crowd willing him on at the 53rd National Schools Track and Field Championships.

With the lightning delaying the event, it was 7:22pm in the evening when Samuel tried one last time to clear 2.07m. The championship record is 2.06m and was set by Wong Yew Tong, then of St Andrew’s Junior College, in 1989.

His valiant attempts were roundly cheered by the watching crowd.

Tan Wei Jie, also of HCI, was second with a 1.95m clearance while Lam Chi Tun of Raffles Institution was third with a 1.89m effort.
