Kong Weng Kai, 54 and David Seow Teck Chye, 53, represented Queenstown CSC in the Community Games where they partnered each other in the Men’s Doubles Masters category.

While many teams were only formed recently for the tournament, Weng Kai and David go back a long way. Weng Kai shared: “We used to play for Brickwood CSC together. David was the one who could book the court and we had a team of friends to play with.”

“That time was 1995. There was an interest group and we were already playing together. We’ve been playing together for over 15 years,” added Weng Kai.

Weng Kai was the one who picked up his racquet again after a brief hiatus in order to play for the constituency. He said: “The team just started, we needed [players from] the CSC to form. Also, we could get some players to play for the constituency.”

Weng Kai took this opportunity to partner his long-time friend David to participate in the Games.

Another reason to take part was that the Community Games provided Weng Kai a form of exercise. The weekly training sessions at Leng Kee CC was a good way for him to keep fit and maintain a healthy blood pressure, he said. At the same time, he got to meet many new people and make new friends.

“From [the Community Games], I got to know many people, many neighbours like Abdullah, Eric and those from our team. Some of us will go out before trainings, and I get to play with my neighbours.”

Weng Kai also had an added piece of advice to share: “When you are young you should have more exercise and keep fit. Otherwise when you get to 50-plus [in age] you will start to have a lot of problems. Exercise, enjoy yourself and relax.”
