Millennia Institute, Friday, May 4, 2012 — Meridian Junior College showed they were favourites to win the National A Division Football Championship when they beat arch-rivals Victoria Junior College 2-1 in their Round 2 game.

The win gives MJC a perfect 7-0 win-loss record. They finished Round 1 top of their group after beating Hwa Chong Institution (3-2), Temasek Junior College (1-0), St Joseph’s Institution International (5-0) and NUS High (5-1).

In Round 2, they beat Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) 2-0 before following that up with a 4-0 win over Millennia Institute.

“MJC are technically stronger. They can play and keep the ball,” said MI head coach and ex-international R Suriamoorthy. “But both MJC and VJC are fit.”

“VJC have lost Dileep Nair who could keep and distribute the ball but they still have Santosh Magar. He’s big and strong,” added Suria.

“MJ are technically more skilled,” added ACS(I) captain Jonathan Ong. “They are physically well built.”

For VJC, they started their season with a comeback 2-1 win over Innova Junior College after initially going behind. They then saw off Catholic Junior College 3-1 before thumping both National Junior College and River Valley High by identical 10-0 wins.

In Round 2, VJC were held to a surprise 1-1 draw by Millennia Institute before they got their campaign back on track with a 4-1 win over ACS(I).

VJC’s record so far is 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.

The semi-finals are scheduled for May 10th and 11th. The venues are not confirmed.
