Kallang Netball Centre, Monday, April 9, 2012 — Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) knocked out Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) with a 38-33 victory in the National C Division Netball Championship.

MGS finished Round 2 with a 2-1 win-loss record and qualified for the semi-finals in second spot behind group winner CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) who won all their three games against RGS, MGS and River Valley High. MGS’ only loss was a 30-28 defeat by CHIJ.

MGS, the West Zone champions, were jittery and unsure in the first quarter. RGS, the South Zone champions, took advantage of MGS mistakes to take a comfortable lead in the first quarter.

However, MGS began to compose themselves in the second quarter and slowly reduced the deficit to only just two points at 8-10 by the end of the second quarter.

After the five-minute half-time break, MGS and RGS traded goal for goal for almost the entire 10-minute third quarter. However, a minor RGS error allowed MGS to draw level at the end of the third.

It looked like a stalemate situation in the initial minutes of the fourth quarter until MGS created three outstanding turnovers, once by the GK, and twice by the GD, which they delivered safely into the hands of their GS. This gave MGS a six-point lead against RGS.

RGS made a valiant attempt to upset MGS in the final moments but MGS held their ground to win the game 38-33.

Both team had a tall GS standing at above 1.75m and it was the defenders from MGS that made the difference in the final quarter of the game.

MGS will take on Tanjong Katong Girls’ School in one semi-final wihle Nanyang Girls’ High will play CHIJ in the other semi-final on Tuesday, April 17th.
