Senja-Cashew Community Club, Sunday, April 15, 2012 — The 2012 Community Games rolled out across Singapore with over 1,000 residents competing in four sports — basketball, bowling, football and badminton.

The games were played in 17 different venues. Community clubs, sports halls and schools hosted basketball, football and badminton games while bowling centres like Kallang Bowl played hosts to teams from six different clusters.

Another three sports — table tennis, netball and sepak takraw — will roll out in May.

The Community Games are the qualifiers for the inaugural Singapore National Games, slated for September 1st to 9th.

10 sports will feature at the National Games. Apart from the seven already mentioned, there will also be athletics, swimming and dragon boat. There are no qualifiers for these latter three sports.

The Community Games are organised by clusters and the best two teams for each sport in each cluster will qualify for the National Games.

Anyone can participate, including non-citizens and Singapore permanent residents. National athletes are also allowed to take part. However, non-citizens and national athletes can only make up at most 20% of the team or one member of the team, whichever is higher.

Registration for the seven sports contested in the Community Games have closed. Anyone interested in taking part in athletics, dragon boat, or swimming can sign up from April 18th to May 31st.
