Presbyterian High, Tuesday, February 28, 2012 — Presbyterian High survived a scare from Hua Yi Secondary to prevail 2-1 (14-25, 25-12, 27-25) in their Group C match at the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Presbyterian High had a disastrous first set as their 12 hit errors gave away many points.

Hua Yi, on the other hand, put up a spirited performance. They kept a clean sheet and did not commit any hit errors to give themselves a much-needed advantage. Their two-man blocks also provided an added edge to their defense as they managed to stop Presbyterian High from making their attacks. These allowed Hua Yi to take the first set comfortably.

Things went downhill for Hua Yi in the second set as Presbyterian High made a comeback to dominate the set.

But it was the third set that was the most nerve wracking. Trailing by an initial eight points at 16-8, Hua Yi made a spectacular comeback to level the scores at 20-20. They then gave Presbyterian High a run for their money as they turned the tables to lead 24-20.

Presbyterian High captain Pua Le Jie (#18) was probably the hero of the match as she helped staged a comeback with her spikes from the outside to close in 25-25. She continued her fine form, and eventually snatched victory for the team as Presbyterian High won the final set 27-25 and, with it, the match.

Presbyterian High had a total of 47 points scored via 31 kills, two blocks, and 14 service aces. Hua Yi managed 34 points from 21 kills, nine blocks, and four service aces. Presbyterian High centre Amanda Tan (#11) was the top scorer with 21 points scored via 17 kills, two blocks, and two service aces. Le Jie (Presbyterian High #18), who struggled to put points on the scoreboard in the first two sets, boosted her scoring tally in the third set as her eight kills put her in second spot with 14 points scored from 10 kills and four service aces.

Hua Yi did not fare too badly with Rannie (#16) and Jestlin (#5) sharing the honors of joint-top scorer for the team. Both had 10 points each from six kills and four blocks.

Hua Yi now have one win and one loss, and will face South Zone champions Cedar Girls’ in their final Round One match. A win will certainly boost their chances at qualifying for the second round while a loss will almost certainly mean elimination for the team.
