Jersey, United Kingdom, February 17, 2012 — After defeating competition favourites England by a score of 45-43 to reach the final, the Singapore girls’ foil team fell to Scotland 44-26 to settle for silver. The girls’ team silver on the final day of competition was Singapore’s second and final medal of the championships.

The result achieved by the team of Liane Wong, Lynn Yeo, Lau Ysien, and Denise Fu is an improvement on the third placing at the last championships held in Malaysia in 2009.

Liane, expressing her relief at winning the silver medal, said: “The whole contingent has been hoping for a win at the team events. And to achieve a silver medal to add to the individual bronze by Willie was a tremendous relief. We will definitely build on this and hope to bring this success to the World Juniors in April.”

The Singapore girls’ foil coach, Mr Viacheslav Bobok, was proud of his charges. He said: “The girls have been working hard for the past year for this and this silver medal will be a big boost for [sic] their confidence.”

Fencing Singapore president Nicholas Fang said: “A sterling effort that once again proves that the athlete development pipeline we have in place is effective in producing our next generation of potential champions.”

In addition to Willie Khoo’s bronze medal from the boys’ individual epee event on Wednesday, the girls’ foil team silver helped Singapore finish sixth out of 14 countries at the championships, ahead of countries such as Australia and Malaysia.

Fencing Singapore was represented in all six events at the Commonwealth Junior Championships — men’s and women’s foil, epee and sabre. The championships took place from February 13-17. The Commonwealth Junior Fencing Championships are held every three years with the last championships held in Malaysia in 2009. The inaugural championships were held in Chennai, India in 2006.
