Jurong West Sports and Recreation Centre, Monday, February 13, 2012 — River Valley High upset Methodist Girls’ School 28-12 to qualify for Round 2 of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship. The loss cost MGS a place in Round 2.
Both teams had earlier lost to Bukit Panjang Government High and so the game between them was an all-or-nothing game with a Round 2 place at stake.
In an earlier game, Yuan Ching Secondary and West Spring Secondary played out a 34-34 draw which must have been really exciting for both spectators and players alike.
With Clementi Town beating Yuan Ching by two goals in their previous match, the game between West Spring and Clementi Town will determine who enters Round 2. If West Spring wins the match against Clementi Town, it will place them at the top of the group. Should West Spring fail to take down Clementi Town, it would be a tie in terms of league points between Yuan Ching and West Spring. To determine the winner, goal difference will be used.
In the West Zone C Division championship, Kranji Secondary also caused an upset in Group C when they beat Nan Hua High 21-17. The loss meant that Nan Hua fail to qualify for Round 2 for the first time in a while. Nan Hua High were leading in the initial quarters but Kranji managed a comeback with accurate shooting from their goal shooter.
In an earlier Group C game, Bukit Panjang Government High (BPGH) beat Nan Hua High 22-15 to top Group C.
The game started with BPGH taking a small lead in the first quarter as both teams were adjusting to each other’s play and settling in.
In the second quarter, BPGH managed to maintain their lead but Nan Hua High were hot on their heels and refused to give up the fight. BPGH’s Goal Shooter was called for a few contact fouls while receiving lobs from her players and that resulted in a few turnovers for Nan Hua High.
In the third quarter, BPGH made some changes to their line up — Goal Attack taking up Center position, current Center was moved into Goal Defense, Goal Keeper was moved to Goal Attack and Goal Defense moved to Goal Keeper. This change in line up seemed to create some confusion for Nan Hua High and resulted in some good interceptions by BPGH’s GK and GD. However, BPGH also made some errors in their attacking side and only managed to create a lead of eight goals in that quarter.
In the final quarter, there were no changes and Nan Hua High increased their efforts and mounted an impressive assault and managed to close the gap to one goal but BPGH eventually held on to win 22-15.
