North Zone B Div Bball (Girls): Woodgrove beat Pei Hwa to secure Round 2 place

Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, February 8, 2012 — Woodgrove Secondary thrashed Pei Hwa Secondary 61-6 to secure a place in the second round of the North Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

Woodgrove ended their first round on a high with a dominant display against Pei Hwa. They were so dominant that Pei Hwa could not score in the second and last quarter and managed just three points each for the first and third quarter.

The win gave Woodgrove second place behind Group Z leaders Seng Kang Secondary who finished with a perfect 4-0 win-loss record.

It was a tough game with pride on the line as both teams were out the running for the second round. However, both teams still played their hearts out.

Right from the start both teams were more focused on defence than offence as they prevented each other from entering the paint. Northbrooks led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter ended in a sort of stalemate as nobody actually made a basket. The ball was often lost near the half court line as both teams pushed for a full court press which resulted in them throwing long passes and losing possession.

There were many scoring chances for both teams but they were just off the mark. The only point of the quarter came when Riverside got fouled on an attempt. At half time, the score was 5-5.

After half time, the same thing happened as the ball went back and forth but the breakthrough finally came for Northbrooks as their full court man-to-man defence worked in the last minute of the quarter. They cut off Riverside’s inbound pass under the basket and converted for two points. Northbrooks managed to score five points in the last minute to put them in front.

Northbrooks never looked back as they gained momentum to win the match 22-9 and finish fourth in their group, one place ahead of Riverside.

In Group X, Deyi Secondary (4-0) qualified for the second round as group winners while Nan Chiau High (3-1) were second.

Group Y was a closely contested group. Christ Church Secondary, North Vista Secondary and Yishun Town Secondary all finished with identical 3-1 records but the head-to-head scores among the three meant Yishun Town were left out in the cold for the second round.
