Jakarta, Sunday, November 20, 2011 — Cherie Tan, 23, led the Singapore keglers with three gold medals as the bowling contingent finished with three gold, two silver and two bronze at the South-east Asian (SEA) Games.

Singapore’s seven-medal bowling performance was only bettered by Malaysia who finished with 14 (5 gold, 3 silver, 6 bronze).

Bowling was also Singapore’s fourth-best SEA Games sport in terms of gold medals won after swimming (17 gold), Table Tennis (5) and Sailing (4).

Notably, it was the women who won all the medals and Cherie stood out with her gold in the Masters, Singles and Team events. Cherie’s win in the Masters step ladder final against Sharon Koh of Malaysia was particularly impressive. The National University of Singapore undergraduate pulverised her opponent 497-372 over two games.

The Singapore girls were also dominant in the women’s team events. Their 6332 pinfall total was not only good enough to beat Indonesia (silver; 5846) and Malaysia (bronze; 5788), the girls would have won the men’s title too where the Malaysian men won gold with 6241.

Cherie had also earlier won the singles gold, although by a much narrower margin than in the Masters. Her 1286 total was just four pins better than the 1284 of Malaysia’s Jane Sin.
