Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, February 19, 2010 – Nan Chiau High School beat Compassvale Secondary School 46-26 to qualify for the Girls’ B Division North Zone basketball semi-finals, as the other zone second round matches resumed after the Lunar New Year break.

Nan Chiau’s #10 led the way with 21 points, as her team won handily after outscoring Compassvale 17-7 in the final quarter. Goh Kailing top-scored for Compassvale with nine points.

They are now eliminated after two second-round losses in as many games, while Nan Chiau will be up against defending North Zone champions Yishun Town Secondary School, who have also qualified for the final four, for top spot in Group B.

Over in Group A, Naval Base Secondary School did their chances of semi-final advancement a world of good when they beat 2009 North Zone second runners-up Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School 39-29.

Point guard Vinnie Koh spearheaded the Naval Base offence with 16 of her 18 points in the first three periods, before Panmeline Liew, who sat distraught with foul trouble in the same timeframe, got back on her feet and scored all 12 of her points in the final quarter to close the game out for Naval Base.

Ahmad Ibrahim will now have to beat group favourites and 2009 North Zone runners-up Woodgrove Secondary School by nine points to avoid elimination.

Over in the Boys’ competition, Yishun Secondary School’s Zhou Zhen Qiang scored a game-high 19 points as his team beat Woodlands Ring Secondary School 64-34. His on-court leadership and superior individual skills made him the standout in a game that was one-sided for the most part.

Toh Qing Huang added nine points for Yishun, while Woodlands Ring’s De Jin was their top scorer, also with nine.

This was Yishun’s second win in Group X, and Woodlands Ring’s second loss. Both teams have played twice.

In Group Y, Hougang Secondary School notched their first win of the second round when they beat Pei Hwa Secondary School 65-39. Hougang’s #8 scorched Pei Hwa with 25 points, including four of his team’s six three-pointers.

Pei Hwa’s Andy Lim had 14 points for his team, which were overwhelmed 24-5 in the final quarter to fall to their second straight defeat.
