Singapore, September 9, 2009 - Olympic gold medallist Leisel Jones, the world record holder of the 100m Breaststroke in the short course category and previous holder of the long course mark, has confirmed her participation in the Singapore leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup 2009 from the 21st to 22nd November 2009.

Following the announcement of American backstroke specialist Aaron Peirsol just weeks before, Jones is the second world record-holder announced for the talented pool of swimmers expected at the Singapore leg. As Australia will not play host to the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup this year, local swim fans can also expect more Australian swimmers in town this year.

At just 15 years of age, Leisel Jones competed on the international platform at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and was part of the Australian Women's 4 x 100 metres Medley Relay at the 2004 Summer Olympics, bagging a gold medal for their efforts. Jones is especially noted for her employment of the classical breaststroke technique, and consistently being the last swimmer to enter the water, emerging from it after the underwater dive.

Her timing of 1:05.17 at the 2008 Summer Olympics was 0.08 seconds away from the 100m breaststroke long course record which she set at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. She set the 100m breaststroke short course record at the FINA World Championships 2008 in Australia, clocking in a time of 1:03.72.

They will be joining an international class of swimmers who will be in Singapore for the final leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup, where swimmers will stand a chance to gain double the points should they win in the Republic.

FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup is an international series of swimming meets, and will begin in October in Durban, South Africa, before making stops in Moscow of Russia, Stockholm of Sweden, Berlin of Germany and finally, Singapore. The prize money for the overall winners will also be presented in Singapore.

The FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup will be held at the Singapore Sports School from the 21st to 22nd November. Heats will be held at 9:30am and the finals at 5.30pm on both days. Tickets are available at www.finaworldcup.com.sg or call 6258 1011 for more information.
