The Singapore women’s rugby 7s team took a step closer to the gold medal today when they ran over Cambodia 29-0 in the second and last day of the pool games.

Met with a fiery Cambodian side who were set on a game of pick-and-go, Singapore held their defensive lines with aplomb. Winger Angela Zheng, who made her debut start, opened the account with a try shortly after the kick-off. Minutes later, Ang Weiyi, who took up the hooking duties for the game, broke from within Singapore’s half to take the score to 14-0. Zheng then scored her second try of the tournament just before half time.

The second half was more of the same with Haseena Allapitchay and Chan Wan Cheng adding the points to bring the final score to 29-0.

Singapore will play Lao PDR in the semi-finals tomorrow and are most likely to meet tournament favourites Thailand in the final which will be played at 1640h.

In the men’s competition, the Singapore ruggers defeated Laos 40-0 and lost to Malaysia 14-21. The men qualified for the semi-final and will play Thailand.
