Dunman Secondary vs Han Hua High
Catholic High vs Deyi Secondary

Story by Red Sports reader, Ian Chew, a teacher of Catholic High. Thanks!

It required extra time to separate Dunman Secondary and Nan Hua High during a first round Group A game this afternoon at the Singapore Basketball Centre. In the end, Dunman showed greater composure and fitness in winning 53-44.

An upset seemed on the cards when Nan Hua, the fourth-best finisher of the West Zone, caught up with Dunman with 20 seconds to go to tie the game at 40-40. With the last possession in Dunman’s hands, their coach decided to play it safe by keeping the ball and letting the time run out. The Nan Hua coach was also content to keep the game tied, by instructing his players to go into a zone defence and watch their opponent run the clock down.

The gamble paid off for Dunman when they emerged the fitter and more composed team in the extra period. #13 and #7 ran the fast breaks for their team to build up their lead. On the other hand, the Nan Hua players lacked the composure to convert their chances when they had them. In the end, Dunman won the game comfortably 53-44 in extra time.

In the other match, Catholic High beat Deyi Sec 71-47 to lead the group on points. The game had been relatively close (first quarter: 19-15) till Deyi Sec’s key centre #15 fouled out early in the third quarter. Catholic High then made use of their centres to pull away in the second half and emerged 71-47 winners.
